In a city that throbs with a huge variety of nightlife only one
Glasgow restaurant can truly lay claim to being the oldest, and that honour falls to Sloans Bar which is located in the city centre, just off Argyle Street. The building is actually a local landmark in its own right and started life out in 1797 as a coffee house, before being turned into the multi-purpose venue it is today at the start of the 20th century. Inside, the bar and restaurant are spread out over three opulent floors, decorated in subtle hues of brown and gold which add to the warmth and friendliness of the welcome. You start to feel right at home as soon as you walk through the doors at Sloans.
Despite being an impressive dining venue, however, Sloans is probably best known for its famous Grand Ballroom which is located on the second floor of the building and reached by an equally impressive grand staircase. This room doubles up as a cinema for the eat film events every Tuesday - more on that in a bit - as well as being one of Glasgow city centre's premier wedding venues and a fantastically impressive corporate events location. However, despite being home to this unique event there’s no doubt that the most popular event held in the ballroom is surely the weekly ceilidh at Sloans which always attracts a loud and vociferous crowd who dance the night away to the sounds of Scottish country music as well as more contemporary tunes played by resident band Chitterybite. The ballroom itself has recently been refurbished and with its beautiful parquet floor, ornate stained glass windows and its amazing gilt cornicing this venue has firmly established itself as one of the premier locations for social events in the city.
Its a truly multi-functional space and regularly plays host to such diverse events as business seminars, exhibitions, wedding receptions and even the regular Tuesday night cinema club! This novel event enables film lovers to combine a fine meal in a top Glasgow restaurant with some drinks from the bar and a free movie thrown in. It’s a great night out and always well attended.
Sloans doesn't just have a reputation as a great party venue either, for the dining facilities are a match for any other
Glasgow restaurant. The restaurant at Sloans, which is situated adjacent to the Grand Ballroom, is decorated in the same decadent style and is the last word in high quality dining. It offers a range of bistro, buffet, a'la carte and even private dining facilities. Whatever your dining requirements, the restaurant at Sloans has it covered. The a'la carte menu is regarded by many foodies as one of the best in Glasgow and when experienced in the surroundings of Sloans restaurant it is truly an experience to savour. If you want to impress a colleague or partner then there is no better venue in town which to do it in. Its a superb location for a quiet night out or for a power lunch.
Another great part of the Sloans repertoire is the small but perfectly formed snug bar which can accommodate up to 25 people as a party or dining venue. The final part of our whistle stop tour comes to the main bar which occupies the whole of the bottom floor of the venue. This great bar is very lively and stock a great range of fine single malts as well as a huge selection of beers. Regular live bands add to the atmosphere and, of course, theres the obligatory pub food, all served in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Finally, a summer night would not be complete without enjoying a few beers in the fresh air outside in Sloans courtyard. Watch out for the summer barbeques where you can eat, drink and make merry outdoors in the heart of the city until the sun goes down.
Sloans is one of the most imporessive Glasgow restaurants around but it offers so much more besides. Its the ideal wedding venue, a fantastic corporate events location and, with a range of popular entertainment evenings like the eat film and ceilidh nights, it should be the first choice on everyones night out.
